Russia-Ukraine War Illustration for Uppsala Universitet

Illustration of the Russia-Ukraine war
Illustrated for Uppsala universitet, IRES (Institutet för Rysslands- och Eurasienstudier)

IRES has launched a project where Ukrainian scholars are invited to share their experiences, thoughts, and ideas about the war: https://www.ires.uu.se/ukrainian-witness/
My illustration is used as a cover on the project website.
Russia invaded Ukraine on 24 February 2022. It was an escalation of the Russia-Ukraine war, which began in 2014 (when Russia annexed Crimea and occupied the Donetsk and Luhansk regions of Ukraine).

Usually, I live in Kyiv. With the invasion, I fled to the Zhytomyr region of Ukraine. It was a relatively safe place, I just heard air alerts all day and had to hide in the cellar or basement. In the Zhytomyr region, I made some photographs used for the illustration, like the fire or the tank composed of twigs and stones.
Two weeks ago I fled to Romania, frightened by the sounds of explosions and by the news about Russian war crimes. Here, in Romania, I can work on illustrations calmer.
